Take Care of Your Teeth and Gums

Regular teeth cleanings and checkups are among the best ways to maintain your oral health, covering not just your teeth but also your gums and the rest of your mouth—inside and out. Cleanings remove plaque, tartar, and bacteria that contribute to cavities, gum disease, and persistent bad breath. A professional hygienist can reach those difficult spots that daily brushing and flossing might miss. These thorough cleanings and exams give your hygienist and dentist a chance to monitor your oral health, detecting and addressing issues early before they turn into painful, costly problems.

Plus, regular teeth cleanings can help your smile appear naturally whiter and brighter without needing whitening treatments.

  • Eliminates plaque, a sticky bacterial layer that can erode your enamel and cause cavities.
  • Removes tartar build-up, which can harden and lead to gum disease if left untreated.
  • Gets rid of stains from coffee, tea, and other beverages, restoring a natural shine.
  • Checks for receding gums, chipped or broken teeth, and other signs of infection or disease.

What Happens During a Teeth Cleaning?

Gum Health

Gum health is incredibly important but often overlooked. Your gums provide vital support for your teeth and help shape your smile. During a cleaning, we take a close look at your tongue, gums, teeth, and other areas of your mouth, focusing especially on the gum line. This allows us to ensure your entire mouth is healthy, free of inflammation, and without any early signs of gum disease. And don’t worry—we won’t be too hard on you about your flossing habits!

Plaque & Tartar Removal

Plaque is a soft, sticky film that naturally forms on your teeth. If it’s not regularly removed through brushing, flossing, and professional cleaning, it can harden into tartar. Tartar is usually darker in colour and tends to build up in hard-to-clean areas like along the gumline. Our hygienists use specialized tools to carefully scale away stubborn plaque and tartar from those tricky spots. Once the plaque and tartar are removed, we polish your teeth to eliminate surface stains and leave your smile shining.

Dentist Exam

After your teeth are freshly cleaned, it’s the perfect time for a dentist to conduct an examination. The dentist will review your chart, check x-rays, and focus on any potential problem areas or patterns. They may suggest additional treatments or offer tips on how to slow or reverse tooth decay, reduce inflammation, or prevent gum disease. We’re always happy to answer your questions or listen to any concerns you have about discomfort, sensitivity, or dental pain.

Cost of Teeth Cleaning in Orillia

Routine checkups and cleanings are a fantastic way to prevent and manage dental issues, which is why most insurance companies will cover them almost entirely on a routine basis—typically every 6 months. However, if you don’t have dental insurance, you can expect to pay anywhere from $120 to $300 or more, especially if it’s your first visit or the first cleaning you’ve had in a while.

When determining the actual cost of your treatment, we consider several key factors:

  • Your current oral health: The condition of your teeth and gums can impact the time and care needed.
  • Whether or not new x-rays are required: X-rays can help us identify any hidden issues, but they may add to the overall cost.
  • The time required by our dental team: Some appointments may take longer depending on your specific needs.
  • The equipment and supplies needed: The tools and materials used to provide high-quality care are also considered in pricing.

We prioritize these routine appointments because they are the most effective way to avoid more invasive treatments, prevent serious dental pain, and keep you smiling happily and healthily.

to schedule an initial consultation & exam.

Your consultation will include an examination of everything from your teeth, gums and soft tissues to the shape and condition of your bite. Generally, we want to see how your whole mouth looks and functions. Before we plan your treatment we want to know everything about the health and aesthetic of your smile, and, most importantly, what you want to achieve so we can help you get there.

Frequently Asked Questions

We typically recommend coming in every 6 months for a cleaning and checkup. However, if you have specific needs, your dentist may suggest more frequent visits. In some cases, we can adjust appointment timing for insurance or cost considerations if needed.

Don’t wait! If you experience any pain or discomfort, contact us right away. While cleanings are a great way to prevent problems, they aren’t the only time to address them. Even if it feels minor, let us know so we can address the issue before it worsens.

Absolutely. Checkups are for your entire mouth, including your gums, tongue, and jawbone. If you wear dentures, we want to ensure they fit properly and check on the overall health of your mouth.

Most dental cleanings take about 30 minutes to an hour, and are done while you relax in a comfortable, reclining dental chair.

Yes! Use a tartar-control toothpaste with fluoride and remember that flossing is the best way to remove plaque from between your teeth, preventing tartar buildup in those hard-to-reach spots. Rinsing daily with an antiseptic mouthwash can also help kill the bacteria that cause plaque.

After a regular dental cleaning, you can eat right away—just try to avoid foods or drinks that are acidic or abrasive. However, if you received a fluoride treatment during your cleaning, wait at least 30 minutes before eating.

Absolutely! Brushing and flossing after your cleaning helps maintain the results and keeps your teeth in great shape.

Dr. Mendel is so kind and patient. It takes me longer to freeze and I'm very picky and indecisive during a bite check but I never feel rushed through the processes (even though I'm sure they're very busy). Ive been to many dentists, good and bad experiences, but Bayside Dentistry has been the most positive and informative dental experience I've had.

Moved from Toronto about 3 years ago and had been travelling back and forth to the city for dental appointments. Last year I had a dental emergency, severe pain in my left side, couldn’t sleep for days and needed urgent dental attention. I called around to different local dentists and Bayside was able to get me in almost immediately. I ended up having an abscess tooth (ouch) which didn’t improve with antibiotics alone which meant I had to get a pulpectomy followed by a root canal once the infection went away. I’m not a huge fan of the dentist to begin with, but with the level of pain and discomfort I was feeling, I was thrilled to be in the dental chair and have someone help me. I’m very grateful for the friendly, caring and professional staff at Bayside and I’ve decided to start coming here instead of using my dentist in the city.

My husband and I are new to Bayside Dentistry and they are an amazing group. The front desk are so gentle and reassuring. I had the manager (Hygenist) yesterday do a cleaning and she was wonderful. I have had a bad experience with many dentists from a young age so I'm very nervous. Trust Bayside Dentistry to give you their best service. They listen to your fears and concerns. My husband and I will be back as we trust Bayside Dentistry. Thank you all so much
