Perfectly Seamless Tooth Restoration

Imagine your tooth getting a second chance with a dental crown—a protective “cap” for teeth that have been cracked, treated with a root canal, stained, decayed, or shaped irregularly. These crowns are custom-made to blend perfectly with your natural teeth in both color and shape, ensuring durability that can last well over 15 years. Beyond restoring individual teeth, crowns can also support dental bridges, cap dental implants, or be used for cosmetic enhancements to improve your smile’s appearance.

What’s The Process Of Getting A Crown?

A dental crown procedure typically involves two office visits.

Here’s how it works:

Examining and Preparing the Tooth

Like any dental procedure, it all begins with a thorough dental examination. The dentist will carefully examine and clean your teeth to ensure they are ready for the procedure. If the tooth is fractured or significantly affected by decay, any damaged areas will be removed to prepare the tooth for the dental crown, which will provide essential protection against further decay.

Shaping the Crown

First off, we’ll take an exact impression of your teeth using dental putty. This helps us make sure your new porcelain crowns fit just right. You’ll leave with a temporary crown until your next visit. If you’re getting a dental implant to replace a missing tooth, we’ll also take impressions of the implant and nearby teeth. Our lab will use these to create a custom crown that fits perfectly into your smile.

Placing the Crown

When you come in for your second visit, we’ll replace the temporary crown for the real deal. We’ll use strong dental cement or a hidden screw to lock it in place securely. Then, we’ll give it a nice polish and check that it fits comfortably. If it needs any tweaks for your comfort, we’ll handle that right there.

Cost of Dental Crowns in Orillia

When it comes to dental crowns, the out-of-pocket cost can vary quite a bit from person to person. Without insurance, you’re looking at around $800 to $1200 or more. While getting your smile back to normal is usually a no-brainer, the price tag might make you think twice.

Several factors play into the cost of a dental crown:
  • The type of crown and the material used
  • Where and how complex the procedure is
  • How many crowns you need
  • If you’re getting other dental work like bridges at the same time
  • The specific supplies and equipment needed for your treatment

Just to let you know, we can’t give you an exact quote over the phone. Your smile’s unique, and so are your needs. The best thing to do is to come in, chat with the dentist, and get checked out. That way, we can discuss all your options and give you a solid quote. If you’ve got dental insurance, we’re here to help with a quote you can send in, so you’ll know what you’re looking at cost-wise before you make any decisions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Whether a root canal requires a crown depends mainly on the tooth’s location in your mouth. Teeth towards the back, such as molars and premolars, are crucial for chewing and often need crowns to strengthen them after a root canal. In contrast, front teeth like incisors and canines, which aren’t as essential for chewing, may not always need crowns after a root canal.

Are dental crowns better than fillings? Well, here’s the scoop: crowns are super durable, especially for teeth with big chewing surfaces. Fillings on molars, especially the biting parts, can chip or come loose from all that chewing and grinding. Crowns, though, cover the whole tooth surface from gum to gum, handling all that pressure like a champ over the long haul.

Not really! They serve two key purposes for your smile: first, they restore your tooth’s function completely, ensuring comfortable chewing without any problems. Secondly, they’re crafted to seamlessly blend in with your other teeth. The shape and color are matched so well that sometimes it’s hard to tell which tooth has the crown!

Think of it as a sturdy support for your tooth when there’s not enough healthy tooth left to hold a crown securely. It’s not as involved as a dental implant, which goes into your jawbone surgically. Instead, a dental post is a medical-grade post that can be cemented into a prepared root canal to strengthen the foundation and core of a dental crown.

When getting a crown, the process can be similar to getting a filling depending on your tooth’s condition. We take care to thoroughly numb the area and use anesthesia as needed to ensure the preparation of your tooth is painless. After the procedure, you might notice some mild sensitivity or discomfort in the gums around the treated tooth, but this typically subsides quickly. If visiting the dentist makes you nervous, please don’t hesitate to inform us. We’re committed to making your visit as comfortable and stress-free as we can.

Typically, dental crowns can last up to 15 years. With proper care and maintenance, though, they can often stay strong and functional for 25 to 30 years.

To maintain your dental crown, treat it like a VIP in your oral care routine. Brush and floss diligently to keep it and your gums in top-notch condition. And of course, don’t skip those regular dental checkups—they’re key to keeping your smile shining bright!

Yes, dental crowns are made to restore full function to your tooth, so you can eat normally. Avoid very hard or sticky foods that could damage the crown.

If your dental crown feels loose or uncomfortable, contact your dentist promptly. They can check it and make any needed adjustments to ensure it fits properly and feels comfortable.

Moved from Toronto about 3 years ago and had been travelling back and forth to the city for dental appointments. Last year I had a dental emergency, severe pain in my left side, couldn’t sleep for days and needed urgent dental attention. I called around to different local dentists and Bayside was able to get me in almost immediately. I ended up having an abscess tooth (ouch) which didn’t improve with antibiotics alone which meant I had to get a pulpectomy followed by a root canal once the infection went away. I’m not a huge fan of the dentist to begin with, but with the level of pain and discomfort I was feeling, I was thrilled to be in the dental chair and have someone help me. I’m very grateful for the friendly, caring and professional staff at Bayside and I’ve decided to start coming here instead of using my dentist in the city.
