The Difference Pediatric Dentistry Makes

Our mission is to give children a great start with dental care that is fun, engaging, and tailored to their needs, fostering a positive bond between the dental team and your child. This approach helps children feel confident and motivated to maintain their oral health, setting the stage for lifelong habits they’ll look forward to continuing.

From the very first visit, pediatric dental care focuses on creating a welcoming environment with child-friendly cleanings and support at every developmental stage. We’re here to guide children as they grow, from discovering their first teeth to losing baby teeth, welcoming adult teeth, and navigating common experiences like getting a filling or starting orthodontic treatment as they approach their teens.

Your Child’s First Appointment

Our focus is always on providing care that prioritizes health, comfort, and satisfaction for every patient. In paediatric dentistry, we take extra steps to address the unique needs of our youngest visitors, tracking key oral health milestones and creating a welcoming experience by speaking to children in a way they can easily understand and feel reassured.

Show and Tell

Every child approaches the dentist differently—some are naturally curious and eager to ask questions, while others may feel shy or uneasy. We aim to create a safe and engaging environment for all children. By having a friendly conversation tailored to their level, we explain the steps of their appointment, answer any questions, and make sure they feel involved and comfortable.

Gentle Examination

We conduct a careful check of your child’s teeth, gums, tongue, and overall oral health. Special attention is given to how their primary teeth are developing and how adult teeth are coming in. This exam helps us identify any areas that may require additional care, whether at home or during future visits.

Keeping You in the Loop

Following the exam, we’ll provide helpful feedback for both the child and their parent or guardian. This may include tips for improving brushing techniques or addressing hard-to-reach spots. We’ll also share any observations about potential problem areas to monitor and explain what to watch for between appointments. Working together, we can ensure your child’s oral health stays on track!

Why Is Children’s Dental Care So Important?

It may surprise some, but there are those who question the importance of children’s dental care, given that baby teeth eventually fall out. By the age of 3, most kids have their full set of primary teeth, which start to shed around age 6. By the early teen years, most permanent teeth (except wisdom teeth) are in place. The state of a child’s dental health during these formative years can have a lasting impact.

Poor Dental Health Hurts

Like adults, children can experience tooth decay, sensitivity, infections, and gum disease. Unlike adults, kids may not always recognize or express their discomfort, often adapting to the pain. Signs such as avoiding hot or cold foods, favouring one side while chewing, or steering clear of chewy foods may indicate they’re dealing with dental sensitivity or pain.

Baby Teeth Set The Stage For Adult Teeth

Baby teeth serve as placeholders for adult teeth, with their roots reabsorbed as the permanent teeth prepare to emerge. Losing a primary tooth too soon can disrupt this process, leading to issues like crowding or misalignment in the adult teeth. Keeping baby teeth and the surrounding gums healthy ensures a strong foundation for permanent teeth.

The Cornerstone Of Confidence

Healthy teeth are crucial for children learning to speak and smile confidently. Social skills and connections start developing early, and dental issues, such as pain or missing teeth, can affect how children interact with others and how they’re perceived by peers.

Good Eating Habits For Growing Bodies

A balanced diet is vital for growing children, and dental discomfort can make eating difficult. Pain may lead to avoiding certain textures, such as crunchy or chewy foods, or favouring one side of the mouth, which can create bad habits. Dental issues may even cause a reduced appetite, impacting overall nutrition.

Frequently Asked Questions

This branch of dentistry is dedicated to the oral health of children, from their earliest years through adolescence. Pediatric dentists are trained to handle the unique challenges that come with a child’s developing teeth and mouth.

Most children begin to get their first teeth around 6 months of age. It’s recommended to schedule their first dental visit by their first birthday or within six months of their first tooth appearing. If you notice any issues or your child seems to be in pain, don’t hesitate to book an appointment sooner. It’s never too late for their first visit.

Pediatric dentists typically care for patients until they reach adulthood, focusing on children and teens up to 18 years old. Their expertise is in managing oral health during these formative years.

Toddlers, like adults, should generally see a dentist every six months. However, the timing may vary depending on individual circumstances, with some opting for appointments every three to eight months. Visits should not be spaced more than a year apart. If your child is experiencing pain or discomfort, schedule a visit right away.

Dr. Mendel is so kind and patient. It takes me longer to freeze and I'm very picky and indecisive during a bite check but I never feel rushed through the processes (even though I'm sure they're very busy). Ive been to many dentists, good and bad experiences, but Bayside Dentistry has been the most positive and informative dental experience I've had.

Moved from Toronto about 3 years ago and had been travelling back and forth to the city for dental appointments. Last year I had a dental emergency, severe pain in my left side, couldn’t sleep for days and needed urgent dental attention. I called around to different local dentists and Bayside was able to get me in almost immediately. I ended up having an abscess tooth (ouch) which didn’t improve with antibiotics alone which meant I had to get a pulpectomy followed by a root canal once the infection went away. I’m not a huge fan of the dentist to begin with, but with the level of pain and discomfort I was feeling, I was thrilled to be in the dental chair and have someone help me. I’m very grateful for the friendly, caring and professional staff at Bayside and I’ve decided to start coming here instead of using my dentist in the city.

My husband and I are new to Bayside Dentistry and they are an amazing group. The front desk are so gentle and reassuring. I had the manager (Hygenist) yesterday do a cleaning and she was wonderful. I have had a bad experience with many dentists from a young age so I'm very nervous. Trust Bayside Dentistry to give you their best service. They listen to your fears and concerns. My husband and I will be back as we trust Bayside Dentistry. Thank you all so much
